Meticulously crafted, but also difficult and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 deep-sea close-quarters epic confirms one of cinema’s first principles: everything moves more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as former oil engineers who still have some “problems” to solve, are recruited to help a embattled Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) in a secret recovery operation: a nuclear submarine has been ambushed and sunk, under mysterious circumstances , in some of the deepest waters on earth, and Petroteknik has the only underwater vehicle capable of diving that far. Every image and presentation is sharp and detailed (and the computerized water creatures are adorable), but the film’s pace ultimately kills. It’s the audience that ends up feeling underwater. For a man who loves guns as much as Cameron (his next film is the masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it’s interesting that the moral balance here is heavily weighted in favor of the can-do engineer; military types are amoralists who justify the means, just like the moody government bureaucrats in Aliens.

Thisis the only true wide anamorphic version of The Abyss ever released, literally all other region versions are cropped with black bars and therefore verylow resolution, also other region versions have film pieces – which adds another 28 minutes to the film.

This re-encoded version is completely uncropped and goes widescreen for the first time.
